Mildred P. Burns passed on March 7, 2025, at the home of her daughter in Columbus, Indiana. She was 99 years old. Mildred was born on November 2, 1925, in Edinburgh, Indiana the only child of Floyd E. and Anna M. (Taulman) Conway. She graduated from Edinburgh High School in 1944 and was the last surviving member of her class. After graduation, Mildred worked at Camp Atterbury during World War II where she registered German prisoners of war. She later worked in retail at Danner’s for thirty years, retiring in 1990. Mildred enjoyed knitting and crocheting, for which she once won Grand Champion at the Bartholomew County 4H Fair.
On February 20, 1945, Mildred married Hoyt G. Burns in Franklin, Indiana. They were married for fifty-eight years at the time of his death on March 22, 2003.Surviving are a son, Gerald (Judy) Burns and a daughter, Kathryn (Fred) Armstrong. Three granddaughters, Shannon (Randy) Royer, Gretchen (Chris Young) Armstrong of Columbus, and Meghan (John) Burns-Landry of Avon, Indiana. Four great-granddaughters, Josie Royer, Eleanor Brand, Amelia Brand, and Harper Brand, and one niece, Cheryl Ann Burns, of Shelbyville, Indiana. Pursuant to Mildred’s wishes, there will be no public service. There will be a private gravesite service at Rest Haven Cemetery. Memorials in Mildred’s name may be made to Our Hospice of South-Central Indiana. The family wishes to thank Our Hospice of South-Central Indiana for the care given to Mildred during her last months of life.
